Our client operates a growing number of retail locations spread across a large geographic area, all connected through an aging network built on end-of-life routers and legacy telco circuits. Performance was poor, device failures were common, and keeping the network running consumed a disproportionate share of the IT team’s time.

When circuits degraded, the only option was to wait for a complete failure before failover engaged — meaning stores regularly operated on bad connections with no relief in sight. As the company continued opening new locations, the strain on both the network and the team managing it only deepened.

This engagement didn’t begin with a client request — it began with us. After identifying network and security risks in the client’s existing infrastructure, we proactively reached out to propose a path forward. Even with an established relationship, we approached the conversation fresh: listening carefully, documenting what the client was experiencing, and comparing that against what the data was telling us.

OUR APPROACH

We designed an SD-WAN architecture that would let the client use both network circuits simultaneously, enable automated failover before a circuit fully degraded, and centralize management across every site. Every location was configured identically — reducing complexity and making the network far easier to operate and scale.

Financial constraints were part of the conversation from day one; rather than a large upfront investment, we structured the engagement so costs could be spread over time. Regulatory compliance in the financial industry was another non-negotiable: we spent dedicated time ensuring every design decision aligned with the controls the client already had in place.

EXECUTION

Coordinated across regions, down to the minute

Scheduling was the single biggest logistical challenge. Installations required tight coordination across our engineering team, the client’s system administrators, regional field technicians, and site managers spread across multiple geographic regions.

To make it manageable, we developed detailed runbooks for technical teams and plain-language one-pagers for site managers — so that on cutover day, everyone from the back office to the store floor knew exactly what was happening and when. Our engineers worked directly alongside the client’s field techs at each location, providing hands-on and backend support throughout.

The result: each site came online in under ten minutes of downtime.

RESULTS

The network stopped being something anyone had to think about

Support ticket volume dropped substantially across the client’s locations. Staff reported that network issues have become rare — sites stay online consistently, and the constant calls about connectivity problems have largely stopped. The IT team has reclaimed dozens of hours per month previously spent on reactive maintenance.

The client now has a network designed for scale, built to meet financial industry security standards, and managed on their behalf — freeing their team to focus on growth rather than infrastructure.
